The neobank ecosystem map: all 368 on one poster

July 20, 2026 · 5 min read · ← all posts · the dataset

Market maps usually show the 40 companies the author could name from memory, arranged around whoever sponsored the report. This one is different: it's every entity in the neobankbeat directory — all 368 neobanks, the 106 infrastructure providers underneath them, and the 219 investors behind them. Every logo, every name, no "representative sample." If a digital bank exists and passes our inclusion criteria, it's on here.

How to read it

The map is organized by the same axis as the directory — the three waves, which are structural, not cosmetic. They differ on the one question that decides everything else: who holds the money.

SectionCountWhat it means
Traditional254Fiat accounts, cards, apps — from WeBank's 400M customers to single-country challengers. The licence split inside this group is the industry's biggest hidden risk: only 127 of all 368 hold their own licence.
Hybrid fiat + crypto58One app, both rails — fiat IBANs next to stablecoin balances. The fastest-moving section of the map right now, powered by the stablecoin card stack.
Web3-native56Self-custodial: no company holds your balance, a smart contract does. Most of fintech still hasn't noticed this section exists — it's a third of all new neobanks founded this decade.
Infrastructure106The layer nobody maps: BaaS platforms, sponsor banks, card issuers, core ledgers. Every "bank in your pocket" is really a stack of these — and when one fails, the failure cascades down to customers (see: Synapse). Full section at /infra/.
The investors219Everyone with a disclosed cheque into a tracked neobank, from Ribbit and a16z to regional funds. Sorted by portfolio count — full breakdown at /investors/.
no duplicates, no logos-for-saleEach neobank appears exactly once, in its structural category. Nobody paid to be on the map, nobody can pay to be bigger on it, and the ordering inside each box is by reported users, then alphabetical. That's the whole methodology.

What the map makes obvious

The long tail is the story. Fintech media covers maybe 20 of these names. The other ~350 are where the actual dynamics live: the emerging-market lenders quietly banking their countries' first-ever account holders, the 117 niche banks serving one audience each, the web3 wallets adding IBANs. A map of the famous 20 would tell you nothing about where the industry is going.

The infrastructure box is small and load-bearing. 106 providers support 368 consumer brands — and inside that box, a handful of names (sponsor banks, the big BaaS platforms, the card processors) each carry dozens of them. The concentration you can't see from the consumer side is exactly the concentration that produces the failures we catalogue in why neobanks die.

Death is already on the map — as absence. Five entities were removed this month alone (liquidated, absorbed, or pivoted away). The map is a snapshot of survivors as of July 2026; the version we regenerate next quarter will not be identical, and that churn is the most honest signal in the dataset.

Made from the data, not from memory

The poster isn't a design deliverable that will silently rot — it's generated by a script from data.json, the same file that powers the directory, the report and the API. When the dataset changes, the map regenerates. The script is in the repo (tests/gen-landscape-full.py) if you want to build your own cut — filter to one region, one wave, one licence type, whatever your deck needs.

Reuse is explicitly welcome: embed it, print it, put it in your board deck — a link back to neobankbeat.com is all we ask. If your company is on the map and something is wrong, or it isn't on the map and should be, file a data fix — corrections ship within a day, and the next render picks them up automatically.
