the changelog

every change to the dataset

What we shipped, plus every dataset change straight from version history — nothing hidden. 381 entities tracked · 31 added and 7 removed since launch · last change September 11, 2026. Removed ≠ deleted: every delisting is archived with its cause of death in the graveyard. Also machine-readable: changelog.json.

A directory is only as good as its maintenance, so the maintenance is public. Below: what we shipped for you, then every change to the data itself.

Every page told the truth about when it last changed
Dates on this site track the data, not the build — a page says "updated 2026-09-11" because that is when its facts last moved, and claiming otherwise would be claiming freshness we did not earn. One of the five crons had been quietly breaking that: it rebuilt the site from a shallow clone, where the git history the builders read the dates out of is simply absent, so it fell back to stamping its own run date across 3,300 pages and committing it. The daily rebuild corrected them at 05:41 and this undid it at 06:07, every day. Both the dates and the check that should have caught it are fixed.

Nubank enters the US — and the dataset catches up
Nu launched US products on 10 September through a partner bank while its conditional OCC charter is organised, and reported 139M customers in Q2 2026 — its first quarter above $1B in net income. The profile now carries the new figure, the United States in its availability, and the partner-bank arrangement alongside its three banking licences. The wider point got a post: in the US only 10 of the 61 neobanks we track hold their own charter.

Six more chapter seats open
The chapter model goes global: Latin America, Asia, Europe, North America, MENA and Oceania each get their own radar page — regional stats, category mix, country breakdown and full roster computed from the dataset, with the steward seat open — plus a dotted continent map per chapter, HQ countries lit in the wave colors. Same trial everywhere: four sourced radar entries plus one audit pass of the region's rows puts your name on the page.
August 18, 2026new
The Africa chapter: an on-ground neobank radar
Most coverage of African fintech is written from London or San Francisco. The new Africa Neobank Radar is the opposite: a running, sourced log of the developments that matter across African digital banking — maintained on the ground, versioned in the open repo, reviewed like every other change. It debuts the chapter model: radar + data stewardship of the region's rows, earned through four sourced entries and a full audit pass. LatAm, Southeast Asia, MENA — the seats are open.

A menu that breathes + a grouped footer
The header's eight flat links become three direct links and a ☰ menu that slides a full-height panel in over the page — every surface on the site, grouped by intent (find a bank / research / data), reachable from anywhere in one tap. The footer's 24-link row becomes four labeled columns. Native HTML details underneath: crawlable, no JS required, Esc/scrim/outside-click to close.
August 17, 2026new
The graveyard — dead neobanks, archived not deleted
Why a neobank fails is worth more than why one succeeds, so delistings now move to a permanent archive instead of vanishing: full last-known profile, delisting date and the cause of death, traced (partner-rail exits, acquisitions, a regulator liquidation). Machine-readable too, as the graveyard array in data.json.

How AI perceives the neobanks: 10 spirit animals
A lighter one: we asked a locally-run image model what animal each neobank evokes — no brand briefs, no art direction. Revolut came back an octopus with a tentacle in everything, MetaMask a fox holding the keys, WeBank a dragon. All ten portraits plus a poster, free to share with attribution.
August 16, 2026new
Ask AI — agent mode for the whole dataset
Type any neobank question and hand it to ChatGPT, Claude or Perplexity with one click — pre-instructed to answer from the open dataset, cite the profile page behind every claim, explain who legally holds the money, and say "unverified" instead of guessing. The zero-typing alternative stays at find-your-fit; power users get the MCP server.
August 14, 2026fix
One-step report download
The report gate now completes in one flow on the page: subscribe in the embedded form and the PDF download starts the moment you finish — no redirect to Substack, no second tab, desktop and mobile alike.
August 13, 2026new
The State of Neobanks № 02 — August
The second monthly report ships — and the first with month-over-month deltas: what changed since July, a "why they died" graveyard page tracing every delisting to its cause (Synapse fallout, partner-bank exits, a regulator liquidation), and the month's new arrivals. 60 pages, free, every figure reproducible from the open dataset.
August 13, 2026new
The money map on every profile
Each neobank profile now carries a "money map": who legally holds your balance, who keeps the authoritative ledger, what protection applies if it fails, and how you get your money back — a protection tier derived only from the verified custody and regulation fields.
August 12, 2026new
World map + header language switcher
A per-country world map shades every country by how many neobanks are headquartered there, each tile linking to that country's list. The language chooser also moved into the header, top-right, so the five localized editions are one tap from any page.
August 11, 2026new
MCP server for AI assistants
Point Claude — or any Model Context Protocol client — at neobankbeat and it answers from the live, cited dataset instead of stale training memory. Five read-only tools over all 381 neobanks.
August 11, 2026new
Funding stage + sortable database
Every neobank now carries a normalized funding stage — Pre-seed through Series C+, Public and Acquired — so you can filter the directory by maturity. A new /database/ view puts the whole dataset in one sortable, scannable table.
August 11, 2026new
Feature matrix + semantic search
19 verified feature flags per neobank (yield, stablecoins, self-custody, IBAN, virtual cards and more) collected into one comparison grid, plus an in-browser semantic search that runs entirely client-side — no backend, works offline.
August 9, 2026i18n
Five languages
Profiles, head-to-head comparisons and country pages localized into German, Italian, French, Spanish and Portuguese — with reciprocal hreflang, localized metadata and a language switcher in the footer, so non-English searchers can find the right neobank in their own language.
August 8, 2026data
11 neobanks added + "emerging" status
Eleven community-submitted neobanks added after hands-on verification, and a new "emerging" status introduced for pre-launch names — the directory can now track what is coming without pretending it is already live.

dataset changes

Generated straight from version history — additions link to their profiles, removals stay on the record. Neobanks die quietly, and the deaths are data too. Every entry maps to a real change in data.json.
